Our MPH meets the needs of both the full-time student preparing for a career in public health, as well as currently employed health professionals seeking an advanced education to enhance their existing skills and background.

In the classroom or online, our public health masters students are trained to understand the role of community empowerment, community mobilization, networks, and partnerships in the development of policies to help these affected populations. Your MPH degree will focus on the task of establishing the services and infrastructure necessary to address these identified problems, and enforcing the policies needed to solve them.

Two year program of study

The MPH is a 42-credit hour degree program. See the MPH Plans of Study. In addition to coursework, students are required to complete a 300-hour field practicum in a community, a public health facility, a government agency, or related setting.

With our MPH from Georgia Southern you will:

  • Inform, educate and engage communities about health and safety issues.
  • Research for new insights and create innovative solutions to promote health.
  • Investigate health problems and health hazards.
  • Mobilize community partnerships.
  • Develop policy.

In addition to concentration specific courses, you will learn the integration of concepts in all five core public health focus areas (biostatistics, community health, environmental health sciences, epidemiology and health policy and management).

Our Applied Public Health concentration is a fully online program focusing on health policy, advocacy, health informatics, and cultural competency. Our other concentrations meet in traditional classroom settings on our Statesboro campus.

Applied Public Health Online

This fully online MPH gives students both the flexibility they need, and a team of people on the other end of their computer to provide both academic and technical support!

MPH Applied Public Health students will complete a broad-based hands-on program of study with the flexibility to tailor their focus with more guided elective options. The focus of this master’s degree is on public health education, information and advocacy. Students will apply their skills and knowledge to become a front-line public health practitioner/public health leader.

Biostatistics

Format: In person on the Statesboro Campus
Credit Hours: 42
Entry Term: Fall

MPH Biostatistics students will learn to apply statistical reasoning and methods in addressing, analyzing and solving problems in public health, healthcare, biomedical, clinical and population-based research. Students will serve rural or urban communities around the world through governmental, private and academic sectors by utilizing biostatistical skills gained in order to help solve public health and biomedical problems.

Community Health

Format: In person on the Statesboro Campus

MPH Community Health students will learn how to advance public health knowledge and reduce the burden of disease in individuals, families and communities through the application of social and behavioral science theory. Students will solve public health problems including health disparities in rural and urban environments.

Environmental Health Sciences

MPH Environmental Health Sciences students will learn to recognize the public health implications of environmental and occupational factors responsible for influencing mortality and morbidity in human populations. Students are trained as environmental health practitioners in a variety of public health settings.

Epidemiology

Format: In person on the Statesboro Campus

MPH Epidemiology students will learn to understand diseases of the human body in order to explain occurrence, distribution and causative factors of diseases in human populations. Students are trained to function effectively as epidemiologists in a variety of public health settings.

Public health professionals with training in health informatics are in demand!

MPH Health Informatics students will learn skills that are essential for informing contemporary public health practice and policy. This online program offers a balanced set of courses covering health informatics foundations and terminology, the use of public health and healthcare information systems to improve health outcomes, health data analytics, information systems management, and the use of public health data visualization for evidence-based practice.

Health Policy & Management

Format: In person on the Statesboro Campus

MPH Health Policy and Management program students will learn leadership skills for the development of policy and management of public health organizations and programs. Students may become public health or healthcare advisors, administrators or policy analysts.
