Welcome from the Director
Rural communities have long been considered a vital ingredient in the success of our nation. Unfortunately, many residents of rural areas experience disparities relative to their urban counter-parts and are at a significant disadvantage both socially and culturally. Attributed to significantly lower levels of both economic and educational opportunities in rural areas, these disparities often result in poor health outcomes. For example, rural populations are more likely to suffer from chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Residents of rural communities are also less likely to participate in primary prevention screening activities and more likely to be uninsured or underinsured. The CHRH at Georgia Southern University is committed to engage in efforts to improve the health status of rural and underserved communities through effective application of health promotion and primary prevention. Consistent with the College’s mission, the Center seeks to be recognized as a leader in the area of public health practice by serving as a valuable resource to rural and underserved populations in the Southeast. The philosophy of the Center is active community engagement. In retrospect, we are pleased to have been able to provide our clients with high-level technical assistance, education, public health research, and program evaluation, but fully understand that there are many challenges that lie ahead. That having been said, I invite you to join us in our journey to promote health and improve the quality of life of those who live in rural and underserved communities in both the state of Georgia and the surrounding region. Sincerely, Stuart H. Tedders, PhD
