Center for Addiction Recovery

Welcome from the Director

Welcome to the Center for Addiction Recovery at Georgia Southern University, and thank you for visiting our website. My name is Emily Eisenhart Moore, and I am the Director for the Center, which is housed in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health. The Center exists to serve the research, teaching, and service needs of Georgia Southern University. We are a non-profit entity dedicated to the study of addiction and the process of long-term recovery through research, educational programs and community based outreach and services. The center is modeled after the highly effective Center for the Study of Addiction and Recovery at Texas Tech University.

The central issue facing a collegiate recovery population is lack of structured addiction and recovery programs, (particularly peer support programs and healthy social networking activities), which are sensitive to the issues faced by our collegiate recovery population. Much data exists on the binge-drinking culture and environment which is so prevalent on college campuses today. Additionally, our students are faced with a fierce stigma should they choose to disclose their identity as a recovering addict. Thus, it is imperative that collegiate recovery communities (CRCs) are established to help facilitate an atmosphere in which students can recover from their addictions while achieving academic, personal and social success.

It is the main goal of C.A.R. to provide that needed support to the recovering students here at Georgia Southern University. We are able to point our students towards a plethora of continuing-care recovery resources that are available for students looking for specific recovery needs. The students in our CRC are dedicated to community service and academic success, and the C.A.R. provides them with resources to make this happen. Recovery is flourishing here, and the students in our CRC have tons of fun in the process!

We know that Georgia Southern University and the greater community will benefit greatly from the rich experience of our recovering students and staff. Please do not hesitate to call for resources regarding addiction literature or to set up interviews with students or others in the recovery community. Through research and education we hope to enrich the public’s understanding of the disease of addiction and the process of recovery.

Sincerely,

Emily Eisenhart Moore, M.A.
