New Associate Dean

Shah_GulzarJiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health (JPHCOPH) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Gulzar H. Shah, PhD, MStat, MS, as the first Associate Dean for Research for the college. Dr. Shah came to serve at Georgia Southern University in January 2012, with an interdisciplinary training and multi-sector work experience spanning 18 years, including appointments in both academia and public health practice agencies, nationally and internationally. Prior to joining Georgia Southern, he served as the Lead Research Scientist at the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) from 2008 to 2011, and the Director of Research and Grants at the National Association of Health Data Organizations (NAHDO) prior to that. Dr. Shah also served at the Utah State Department of Health for six years in various capacities, contributing significantly to patient safety project, maternal and child health research, health informatics initiatives, and health services and systems research. Through his work with the two national level public health organizations, Dr. Shah has built an impressive network of collaborative relationships with colleagues in other public health schools/programs, and lead public health organizations.

Dr. Shah is an experienced investigator with funding from NIH, CDC, and multiple foundations.  He serves on the editorial board of three peer reviewed journals, including as Biostatics Consulting Editor for the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice. He has published over  60 peer  reviewed research articles and book chapters in a number of research areas, including practice-based public health systems and services research, eHealth and public health informatics, public health finances, quality improvement and public health accreditation, patient safety, and quality of health care.
