Dr. Yu and Dr. Charles Receive University Faculty Research Awards Dr. Lili Yu, Assistant Professor – Biostatistics, received a Georgia Southern University Faculty Research Committee FY09 Competition Award of $5,0232.00 for her project entitled Efficient Statistical Methods in AFT model for Cancer Data.
Dr. Simone Charles, Assistant Professor – Environmental Health Sciences, received a Georgia Southern University Faculty Research Committee FY09 Competition Award of $9,996.50 for her project entitled Waste Water Reuse: An Analysis of Sorption Behavior of Pharmaceuticals in the Environment.

American Cancer Society - Relay for Life 2009 On April 17, 2009, students, faculty and staff gathered at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fairgrounds in Statesboro, Georgia to participate in the annual Relay for Life event. Public Health for Young Adults (PHYA) Volunteers Needed Public Health Day, also know as PHYA, is quickly approaching. It is on April 16, 2009 from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Twenty volunteers are needed from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. We are willing to sign off on volunteer hours if needed. Volunteers will assist with:
- Room Monitoring (including evaluation collecting, noise control and directing students between rooms)
- Set Up
- Clean Up
- Registration
If you want to help out but can't the day of, we will need volunteers to help stuff bags.

Migrant Clinic Quality of Life Drive As of Monday, February 9 there will be a collection box in the main office of Cone Hall to collect quality of life items for the migrant farm-worker clinics. The collection box will remain in the main office until April 2. Please donate items such as:

JPHCOPH MPH Epidemiology Students attend 26th Annual BRFFS Conference During the week of Spring Break, March 14-18, 2009, we (Linda Ekperi, Rob Cosgrove, and Ekeoma Ogbonna–MPH Epidemiology students) attended the 26 th Annual Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) Conference in Atlanta , Georgia. This year's theme was "Responding to Changes in the Survey Environment", and the main focus was on keeping up with current technology and finding ways to survey populations more effectively. JPHCOPH Faculty and Students Engaged in Georgia Rural Health Association Meeting The 2008 GRHA Conference and Annual Meeting were held at Brasstown Valley Resort, Young Harris, Georgia, September 15-17. The theme of this year's conference "Rural Can't Wait - Better Health in 08" addressed a variety of issues including public health concerns, quality of care, and the use of technology. JPHCOPH holds Graduate Assistant Orientation Dr. Kari Fitzmorris, DrPH Program Director, and the JPHCOPH faculty welcomed the graduate assistants within the JPHCOPH on August 14th in the lobby of Cone Hall. Roles, responsibilities and expectations were discussed and the graduate assistants and their faculty supervisor discussed work schedules etc. A spirit of teamwork was felt among all who attended. The University Convocation followed our JPHCOPH meeting and featured the State of the University Address by President Bruce Grube. Dr. Karl E. Peace recognized at Fall 2008 Convocation for Excellence in Research/Creative Scholarly Activity During the 2008 Convocation ceremonies, the University recognized a select group of faculty for their excellence in service, contribution to instruction and research/creative scholarly activity. The Award for Excellence in Research/Creative Scholarly Activity seeks to recognize persons who excel in their research efforts in addition to fulfilling regular full-time teaching responsibilities. Dr. Karl E. Peace of the JPHCOPH was presented the Faculty Award Excellence in Research/Creative Scholarly Activity. Each recipient receives a summer contract to continue instructional, research, or service activities and to develop a mechanism for sharing expertise with faculty, staff, and students. In addition, each recipient is invited to deliver a lecture to faculty, students and staff highlighting their works of excellence. Dr. Peace will present his lecture entitled "Labor and Fruits of a Purpose Driven Life" on March 31, 2009 in room 3301 of the Professional Development Center within the College of Information Technology.
