Dr. Karl E. Peace Recipient of the Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Award Dr. Karl E. Peace was the recipient of the Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Award at an invitation-only gala held March 25, 2008 at 7 p.m. at the Nessmith-Lane Building on the campus of Georgia Southern University. The Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Awards, hosted by the Statesboro Herald and supported by numerous local businesses and individuals, honors those who serve others with compassion and dedication without expectation of compensation or credit. The Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Awards is an invitation-only event, named for the renowned humanitarian Deen Day Smith Sanders, whose late husband Cecil B. Day founded Days Inn. Sanders is known for her generosity and selflessness.

Willingway Foundation Provides Gift to Create Center for the Study of Addiction and Recovery at Georgia Southern University The Willingway Foundation, a nonprofit affiliate of the Willingway Hospital in Statesboro, Ga., has presented an initial gift of $25,000 to the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health (JPHCOPH) as start-up funding to create the Center for the Study of Addiction and Recovery at Georgia Southern University. American Public Health Association honors Peace The American Public Health Association recently presented one of three Statistics Section Awards to Karl E. Peace, professor of biostatistics in Georgia Southern University's Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health, at its annual meeting in Washington, D.C. The award was presented to Peace by David Williamson, a Georgia Southern University alumnus and Director of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) in the CDC's Division of Health Studies. Dr. Tom Kollars Teaches a Biosafety Course in Thailand Dr. Tom Kollars recently taught a course on the topic of regulatory responsibilities concerning Biosafety and Handling Wildlife at the Animal Care and Research in Bangkok, Thailand. The students hailed from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia. The course was funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Global Health Affairs and hosted by the U.S. Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences.

Southwest Georgia Residents will Benefit from New Community Health Initiative The Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health (JPHCOPH) at Georgia Southern University has been awarded a two-year, $500,000 grant from Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital of Albany, Ga., to develop a comprehensive assessment of community needs in the hospital’s Southwest Georgia service area. Using community and provider data, JPHCOPH will develop targeted programs to improve the health status of the community and remove health disparities among its residents. Full Story 11/26/2007
JPHCOPH hosts 3rd Annual Thanksgiving Feast On November 15th the faculty, staff, and students of JPHCOPH celebrated Thanksgiving with the annual Thanksgiving Feast. JPHCOPH Participates in University Live Wellness Fair The JPHCOPH and the PHSA recently participated in the Georgia Southern University's 2007 Wellness Fair. The event took place on October 31st, from 8am to 2pm in the Russell Union Ballroom. This year's theme "Live Healthy Georgia" was centered around the idea of "being positive" by "being smoke free, being active, eating healthy, and getting checked". While representing our college, PHSA promoted the idea of "getting checked" by handing out flyers with information by age, for men and women on being screened for appropriate health conditions. PHSA Kicks off Fundraiser for American Cancer Society's Relay for Life with Oktoberfest "Beer & Brats" The Public Health Student Association celebrated Oktoberfest by selling "beer and brats" to raise money for American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Elizabeth Graham, M.H.S.A. Student Inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa Society, Inc. Elizabeth has been selected for membership into the Georgia Southern Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa. Membership in ODK is a mark of highest distinction and honor recognizing scholarship, leadership, and exemplary character. Elizabeth chose Dr. Gerald Ledlow as her mentor. They will both be honored at the induction ceremony on Sunday, November 11 in the College of Information Technology. Congratulations to Elizabeth for being recognized as a student leader and to Dr. Ledlow for being selected by Elizabeth as her faculty mentor. 11/12/2007
PHSA Participates in First Annual Memory Walk Statesboro held first annual Alzheimer's Association's Memory Walk on Saturday, October 27th at Bulloch Academy. This event helped raise money for and awareness about Alzheimer's Disease. PHSA member volunteers were David Bostick, Chandra Rivers, Heather Mayer, Shonta Chambers, and Chris Brown. They helped set up tables, decorated the entire track area with signs and Memory Walk balloons, and also participated in the walk. 11/12/2007
Second Seminar Features Gayle Bina: "Winning the Cancer Battle in Georgia: Using the Public Health Model". Second in the seminar series initiated by the Office of Public Health Research was seminar topic was "Winning the Cancer Battle in Georgia: Using the Public Health Model," by Gayle Bina, an independant Public Health Consultant. She described statistics related to cancer diseases and deaths in Georgia, relating them to the Public Health Model. She emphasized that cancer will touch all of us one way or another and that we must do something about it. 11/12/2007

First in Seminar Series: Dr. Claire Hicks: "Until We're Insured" Dr. Claire Hicks, the Clinical Coordinator Georgia Public Health District 9-2, spoke on a topic that she is very passionate about and that affects all of us. She received her M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia in Macon and completed her residency at the Family Medical Center in Macon. She has been treating uninsured patients with HIV/AIDS in Southeast Georgia for many years. She realizes first hand the devastation, frustration, and even deadly consequences of not being insured. JPHCOPH Hosts Bar-B-Q for Students/Faculty On Friday, September 21st, students and faculty were able to share a meal, conversation, fishing and a fun time at Ms. Lee Mitchell's Pondhouse. Family members and friends of students and faculty also enjoyed the afternoon of fishing and games. A hotdog and hamburger meal was catered by Bruce Yawn, owner of Snooky's Restaurant of Statesboro. 10/3/2007

Dr. Karl E. Peace honored by the SWGCC On July 17, 2007, the Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition awarded Dr. Karl E. Peace, Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar and professor of biostatistics in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health, both a Certificate of Appreciation, and a Distinguished Service Award for contributions and leadership relating to cancer screening programs in Peace's native Baker County, Georgia, in their efforts to have Baker County achieve the highest cancer screening rates in the nation. 9/10/2007
