Public Health Faculty at Georgia Southern Evaluate Model for Managing Asthma among Children Asthma is the third leading cause of hospital visits for children, the leading cause of school absenteeism, and has an annual economic cost of $3 billion nationwide. With such a tremendous impact on public health, the researchers at Georgia Southern’s Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health were pleased to accept an invitation from the Georgia Department of Community Health to evaluate the Rural Asthma Initiative (RAI), an integrated model for managing asthma among children. JPHCOPH Celebrates National Public Health Week with Lecture by Dr. Roshi In 1995, President Clinton proclaimed the first full week of April as National Public Health Week (NPHW). Each year since then the public health community has focused on issues that are important to improving the public's health. Dr. Peace Publishes Invited Lectures in The Philippine Statistician Dr. Karl E. Peace, Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar & Professor of Biostatistics recently published two articles in The Philippine Statistician [54 (4), pp. 1-20; 2005]: "Statistical Section of a Clinical Trial Protocol" and "On the Analysis of a Combination of Two Primary Efficacy Measures." These articles are in follow-up to the lecture series Dr. Peace gave at the Biological Institute of the University of the Philippines at Los Banos, and at Medical School of the University of the Philippines at Manilla, in December of 2004 on Biostatistical Aspects of Clinical Research, sponsored by the Philippine Statistical Society. 3/23/2006

Peace Featured Speaker at Baker County Health Fair for Farmers Dr. Karl E. Peace, GCC Distinguished Cancer Scholar and Professor of Biostatistics in the JPHCOPH, was the featured speaker at the Baker County, Georgia Health Fair for Farmers, held Monday, February 6, 2006, in Newton, Georgia. The event was co-sponsored by the Farm Bureau, the Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition (SWGCC), Albany Area Primary Health Care, Inc., the Southwest Georgia Community Health Department, and the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health (JPHCOPH). The JPHCOPH in collaboration with the SWGCC currently have ongoing three research studies related to cancer screening and behavioral interventions to improve health in Baker County. Dr. Peace is a native of Baker County, and recently endowed two scholarships at Georgia Southern for students from Baker County. 2/6/2006

Tedders appointed to Office of Rural Health Services board Stuart H. Tedders, assistant professor of epidemiology at Georgia Southern, has been appointed to serve as a member of the Advisory Board for Georgia’s Office of Rural Health Services. Jiann-Ping Hsu School of Public Health evolves to college status at Georgia Southern University Officials at Georgia Southern University recently announced the evolution of its Jiann-Ping Hsu School of Public Health to college status. The new college is named the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health, continuing both the name and the generous endowment given by Karl E. Peace, Ph.D., to honor his late wife, Jiann-Ping Hsu, Ph.D., in January 2004 to create the first school of public health within the University System of Georgia. Full Story 2/2/2006

Georgia Southern biostatistics program producing graduates to work in drug development and testing Developing and testing a new drug requires the best efforts of a team of experts, and one of those much-needed experts is a biostatistician, a mathematical scientist who designs drug testing protocols and manages, analyzes, and interprets the resulting data. Since its inception in 2001, Georgia Southern University's biostatistics program, working through the Karl E.
