Blood Drive The November 4th blood drive was co-sponsored by the Public health Student Association, Neo Truth, and Circle K student organizations. This drive was held at the Russell Student Union Rooms 2041 and 2047 from 12.00 noon till 6.00pm. The drive signed up and recruited over 100 donors, in order to reach a goal total of at least 80 viable donors. 11/4/2009
Georgia Southern Faculty Member Karl Peace, Ph.D. Honored On U.S. House Floor Georgia Southern University faculty member Karl E. Peace, Ph. D. has been honored on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for his numerous professional and charitable contributions. Peace is a Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar, Senior Research Scientist and Professor of Biostatistics in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University.

Dr. Jacob Warren and Dr. Bryant Smalley Awarded HRSA Grant for CHANGES Project Georgia Southern University faculty Jacob C. Warren, Ph.D. (Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health-JPHCOPH) and K. Bryant Smalley, Psy.D. (Department of Psychology) have been awarded a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Rural Health Care Services Outreach Grant in the amount of $308,244 to fund the Community Health Access Network for Grassroots Education and Screening (CHANGES) project. The goal of the 3-year CHANGES project is to increase access to health education, preventive screening, and early detection by establishing a sustainable community network of educators, students, community organizations, and churches to take physical and mental health screening and education fairs to rural and underserved populations throughout Bulloch County, Georgia. The project will also generate descriptive data on the health needs of rural populations. The fairs will be put on by a consortium of departments at Georgia Southern University (JPHCOPH, the Psychology Department, and the School of Nursing), the Magnolia Coastlands Area Health Education Center, and the Bulloch County Health Department. 9/1/2009

JPHCOPH Awarded Grant from Healthcare Georgia Foundation to support a major statewide public health initiative The Healthcare Georgia Foundation, Inc., has awarded the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health a $100,000.00 grant to design a cross-site and site specific evaluation of the five Georgia Childhood Asthma Management projects, also funded by the Foundation, to improve asthma outcomes among Georgia's children and adolescent populations. Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in the JPHCOPH, Dr. Lynn Woodhouse, is the Principle Investigator of the grant. The JPHCOPH research team includes the following faculty from the JPHCOPH: Russ Toal, MPH (Co-Principle Investigator) Dr. Cassandra Arroyo, Dr. Simone Charles, Dr. Laura Gunn, Dr. Mondi Mason, and Dr. Stuart Tedders. Dr. Trang Nguyen, Research Scientist, New York State Department of Health, will serve as the Asthma Evaluation Expert Consultant for the grant. 8/1/2009

Diabetes Walk (Oct. 10th, 9am - 11am at Mill Creek Park) We are taking part in Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes to support the American Diabetes Association.
